About Livingstone

Flying into Livingstone gives you easy access to the world-famous Victoria Falls. The Victoria Falls is on the Zambezi River, forming the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe. It was described by the Kololo tribe living in the area in the 1800s as ‘Mosi-oa-Tunya’ – ‘The Smoke that Thunders’.

Columns of spray can be seen from miles away as, at the height of the rainy season, more than five hundred million cubic meters of water per minute plummet over the edge, over a width of nearly two kilometres, into a gorge over one hundred meters below.

The town was inspired and named after Scottish explorer Dr David Livingstone who was the first European to see and name the Falls after the British queen at the time.

Depending on the time of year you can see incredible storms, lightning and cloud formations. Zebras roam around the grass and pool areas of local hotels. You can come across giraffes while driving or biking around, just cruising across the road. Elephants can pass through at certain times of the year, they are a nuisance for the locals because they can push down concrete and other fencing.
